Current clinical approaches for treating degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis involve intra-articular injections of corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and mesenchymal stem cells due to the limited regenerative capacity of hyaline cartilageNotably, the application of autologous microfragmented adipose tissue has been shown to increase glycosaminoglycan content in hyaline cartilage, thereby reducing pain and improving functional outcomesFuture strategies focus on classifying patients by phenotypes and utilizing growth factors like sprifermin and BMP-7, along with monoclonal antibodies and gene therapy, all of which show promise but require further clinical validation.
