Stigma (stigmatization) is a concept of Latin origin that refers to the devaluation of individuals by society due to their physical disabilities, personality traits, or ethnic backgrounds. Stigmatization, which can occur at structural, social, and internalized levels, is directly related to the concepts of stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, and attitudes. Mental disorders, neurological diseases, obesity, aging, cancer, skin diseases, and infectious conditions such as COVID-19 are frequently subjected to stigmatization in society. This process impairs patients' quality of life, reduces treatment adherence, and leads to social isolation and even suicidal tendencies. The role of physicians and healthcare personnel is critical in combating these negative attitudes that begin in childhood. In outpatient clinic settings, an unprejudiced approach, paying attention to patient privacy, providing scientific information, and using systematic evaluation scales help alleviate stigmatization. This public health problem must be combated holistically through multi-faceted strategies such as public education, effective use of media, and online follow-up channels.
