Hypnosis is a special state of consciousness applied by an expert therapist using suggestions, leading to changes in emotion, perception, thought, and behavior. Sessions consist of four main phases: induction, deepening, hypnotherapy, and termination. In the induction phase aiming for calmness, techniques such as eye closure, progressive relaxation, breathing methods, imagery, and Chevreul's Pendulum are utilized. Following induction and deepening, the therapist delivers behavioral (ideomotor), sensory (ideosensory), challenge, cognitive, or post-hypnotic suggestions tailored to the specific target. In clinical applications, hypnosis is particularly effective in anxiety, phobic, and conversion disorders, and can be integrated with cognitive behavioral therapies. Furthermore, by regulating the activation of pain centers in the brain, it is widely used in pain control, smoking cessation, emergency department interventions, and pregnancy/childbirth processes. Conversely, low hypnotic susceptibility and insufficient motivation hinder the application, while organic brain syndrome that impairs sustained attention, acute phases of bipolar disorder, and conditions requiring advanced expertise such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, multiple personality, post-traumatic stress, and psychotic disorders present contraindications or risks. With its scientific foundations becoming clearer, hypnotherapy is successfully utilized today as a supportive or independent treatment despite historical prejudices.
