Sports tourism is a rapidly growing global sector with roots tracing back to the Ancient Olympic Games, holding a highly critical role in both economic development and improving people's living standards. Gaining significant importance in academia and the commercial world over the past two decades through incentives from organizations such as the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), this field is examined under three main categories: Sports Event Tourism (mega-events like the Olympics and the World Cup), Active Sports Tourism (direct participation in activities such as outdoor pursuits, adventure, golf, and skiing), and Nostalgia Sports Tourism (visiting sports museums and famous historical venues). Furthermore, it encompasses active participation forms where individuals directly engage in sports, as well as passive participation forms involving spectators or officials. Throughout the historical and academic progression spanning from the first publications in 1966 to the IRNIST network and the 2014 Portugal Sports Tourism Conference (STC'14), opportunities brought by globalization, sustainable local development, marketing approaches, and new consumption trends have been comprehensively analyzed. Sports tourism creates a major economic impact through mega and mass-participation events by stimulating ancillary sectors such as accommodation, transportation, food and beverage, souvenirs, and retail, thereby supporting small businesses. Today, the sports industry—continuously evolving and diversifying with both traditional and technological products—requires sustainable management, integration, and marketing strategies that address the needs of all segments of society, including children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities.
