Chronic stress is a significant factor that negatively impacts both mental and physical health, whereas the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral methods developed by individuals to mitigate these adverse effects are defined as "coping skills". In the classification of these skills, based on Lazarus's transactional model, a distinction has been made between problem-focused and emotion-focused coping, and subsequently, active-passive and adaptive-maladaptive dimensions have been incorporated into these strategies. Research demonstrates that individuals utilizing active and problem-focused coping methods display lower levels of depression and anxiety, less suicidal ideation, and higher self-esteem. Conversely, the frequency of psychiatric disorders and symptom severity are found to be substantially higher in individuals who adopt emotion-focused and dysfunctional (maladaptive) coping strategies. In the context of gender, it is observed that women more frequently utilize emotion-focused coping, while men exhibit problem-focused or avoidance-oriented attitudes, and functional coping has been shown to alleviate symptoms during global crises such as pandemics. In conclusion, evaluating an individual's coping mechanisms in the development and treatment processes of psychiatric disorders contributes highly positively to the prognosis and course of the disease.
