Vocal health is an essential communication tool formed by the coordination of structural and physiological systems, reflecting an individual's internal state. Negative behaviors such as speaking loudly, shouting, insufficient hydration, smoking, and alcohol consumption damage the vocal folds, leading to serious voice disorders like hoarseness, edema, nodules, and even cancer. The vocal hygiene program, which is the initial step in preventing and treating such problems, is a patient-centered, indirect behavioral treatment approach aiming to make individuals realize their faulty habits, alter them, and acquire healthy voice habits. Within the scope of the program, consuming at least 2-2.5 liters of water daily, supporting correct nasal breathing and posture, and avoiding sudden, harsh voice onsets are recommended. Furthermore, implementing voice rest during prolonged speaking, avoiding whispering, and terminating the consumption of smoking, alcohol, and foods that trigger reflux are of critical importance. Research demonstrates that vocal hygiene education reduces voice symptoms in professional voice users such as teachers, singers, and telemarketers, and increases the resolution rate of benign vocal fold lesions without requiring surgical intervention. Consequently, adhering to vocal hygiene rules customized by a Speech and Language Therapist carries vital importance for protecting the quality of life and maintaining a healthy voice.
