Yüz Maskelerinin Özel Gereksinimli Bireylerin Günlük İletişiminde Neden Olduğu Zorluklar ve Çözüm Yolları

Özet

COVID-19 salgını döneminde zorunlu hale gelen sosyal mesafe ve yüz maskesi kullanımı, özellikle işitme kayıplı ve özel gereksinimli bireylerin günlük iletişiminde ve yaşam kalitelerinde ciddi olumsuzluklara yol açmıştır. Yüz maskeleri, orta ve yüksek frekanslardaki ses yoğunluğunu azaltarak düşük geçişli bir akustik filtre görevi görmekte, bu da konuşma gürlüğünü düşürüp ses kalitesini zayıflatmaktadır. N95 ve KN95 gibi kalın maskeler yüksek frekanslı seslerde daha fazla akustik zayıflamaya neden olurken, yüzün büyük kısmını kapatmaları sebebiyle kimlik tanıma, duygu analizi ve dudak okuma gibi hayati görsel ipuçlarının kullanılmasını engellemektedir. Bu iletişim yetersizliği, sağlık hizmeti alımında hasta memnuniyetsizliğine ve vokal yorgunluğa yol açmaktadır. Bu zorlukları aşmak için yüz ve dudak hareketlerinin görünmesini sağlayan şeffaf pencereli maskelerin kullanımı, konuşmacıların dinleyici odaklı yavaş ve net konuşma stilini benimsemesi, sanal toplantılarda anlık altyazı desteğinden ve işaret dili tercümesinden yararlanılması önerilmektedir. Ayrıca iletişim kurmadan önce dikkat çekilmesi, gürültüsüz ortamların seçilmesi ve akıllı telefonlardaki ses yükseltici uygulamaların kullanılması gibi stratejiler işitme kayıplı bireylerin sosyal entegrasyonunu ve sağlık hizmetlerinden etkin şekilde yararlanmasını kolaylaştırmaktadır.

The mandatory use of face masks and social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic has caused serious adverse effects on the daily communication and quality of life of individuals with hearing loss and special needs. Face masks act as a low-pass acoustic filter by reducing sound intensity at middle and high frequencies, which decreases speech loudness and weakens voice quality. While thick masks like N95 and KN95 cause more acoustic attenuation in high-frequency sounds, they prevent the use of vital visual cues such as identity recognition, emotion analysis, and lip-reading because they cover most of the face. This communication insufficiency leads to patient dissatisfaction in receiving healthcare services and vocal fatigue. To overcome these challenges, it is recommended to use transparent windowed masks that allow facial and lip movements to be seen, adopt a slow and clear listener-oriented speech style by speakers, and utilize real-time subtitling support and sign language interpretation in virtual meetings. Furthermore, strategies such as drawing attention before communicating, choosing noise-free environments, and using sound amplifier applications on smartphones facilitate the social integration of hearing-impaired individuals and their effective utilization of healthcare services.
