During the COVID-19 pandemic, dental treatments posed a high risk of cross-infection due to the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through droplets and aerosols, leading to the suspension of routine dental services worldwide. To overcome this gap and maintain social distancing, teledentistry, a subfield of telemedicine, emerged as an innovative solution by enabling remote consultation, triaging, and diagnosis through synchronous or asynchronous telecommunication methods. Teledentistry offers significant benefits, such as reducing unnecessary hospital visits for high-risk patients, lowering costs, and enhancing access to specialists, particularly in developing regions; furthermore, it serves as a valuable tool for dental education by providing a secure platform for clinical case discussions. However, its global adoption has been hindered by several limitations, including inadequate intraoral imaging quality for diagnosing deep or interproximal caries, a lack of telehealth training in existing dental curricula, legal issues, and technological resistance among practitioners. Consequently, integrating teledentistry into undergraduate programs is essential to overcome these challenges, as telemonitoring tools are anticipated to become an essential, time-saving component of daily routine dental practice beyond the pandemic.
