Özet

Kronobiyoloji, canlılardaki endojen biyolojik saatleri ve saniyelerden yıllara kadar uzanan sirkadiyen, ultradiyen, infradiyen ve diurnal biyolojik ritimleri inceleyen bilim dalıdır. Tarihsel kökenleri 18. yüzyıla dayanan bu alan, günümüzde hipotalamustaki suprakiazmatik nukleus (SKN) tarafından yönetilen hiyerarşik ve genetik mekanizmalarla açıklanmaktadır. En baskın zaman belirleyici (zeitgeber) ışıktır; retinadan gelen ışık bilgisi SKN vasıtasıyla melatonin gibi hormonal döngüleri ve periferik saatleri senkronize eder. Bireylerin uyku-aktivite tercihlerini belirleyen kronotipler (sabahçıl, akşamcıl, ara tip) fizyolojik ve psikolojik sağlık üzerinde doğrudan etkilidir. Endojen saat ile sosyal zamanlamanın uyuşmaması; obezite, diyabet, kanser ve psikiyatrik hastalık riskini artırmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda gelişen kronoterapi, müdahaleleri biyolojik ritimlere göre planlayarak yan etkileri azaltmayı ve tedavi etkinliğini artırmayı amaçlar. Özellikle ışık tedavisi ve uyku yoksunluğu gibi kronoterapötik yaklaşımlar, hızlı etki ve düşük maliyet avantajlarıyla duygudurum ile uyku bozukluklarının tedavisinde yaygınlaşmıştır. Sonuç olarak, biyolojik ritimlerin hücresel ve moleküler düzeyde anlaşılması hem koruyucu hekimlikte hem de kişiselleştirilmiş tedavi yöntemlerinin geliştirilmesinde tıbba büyük katkılar sağlamaktadır.

Chronobiology is the branch of science that examines endogenous biological clocks in organisms and biological rhythms, such as circadian, ultradian, infradian, and diurnal rhythms, ranging from seconds to years. With historical roots dating back to the 18th century, the field is currently explained through hierarchical and genetic mechanisms managed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus. Light is the most dominant time cue (zeitgeber); visual light information synchronizes peripheral clocks and hormonal cycles like melatonin via the SCN. Chronotypes (morningness, eveningness, intermediate type), which determine individuals' sleep-activity preferences, directly impact physiological and psychological health. Misalignment between the endogenous clock and social timing increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, cancer, and psychiatric disorders. Accordingly, chronotherapy aims to minimize side effects and enhance treatment efficacy by scheduling interventions based on biological rhythms. Particularly, chronotherapeutic approaches such as light therapy and sleep deprivation have become widespread in treating mood and sleep disorders due to rapid efficacy and low costs. Consequently, understanding biological rhythms at cellular and molecular levels substantially contributes to medicine in both preventive healthcare and the development of personalized treatment methods.
