The circadian system is an internal biological clock managed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus, enabling living organisms to adapt to the earth's 24-hour cycle. The sleep-wake cycle, the most prominent circadian rhythm, operates synchronously with melatonin as well as environmental and social cues. Disruptions in this rhythm can lead to severe illnesses such as sleep disorders, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and Alzheimer's disease. Individuals' biological and behavioral sleep-activity preferences are defined as "chronotype" and categorized into three groups: morning, evening, and intermediate types. Chronotype preference is influenced by factors such as age, gender, perinatal photoperiod, and geographic coordinates. For instance, morning types exhibit higher morning cortisol levels, whereas evening types experience delayed melatonin release and body temperature phases. Furthermore, morning types are found to possess an analytical (left-brain) thinking structure, being more conscientious and achievement-oriented, while evening types are more prone to creative (right-brain) thinking, novelty-seeking, and extraversion. Consequently, circadian rhythms and chronotypes comprehensively influence human physiology, lifestyle, cognitive performance, and personality traits.
