Sosyal Jetlag

Social Jetlag (SJL) is a chronic alignment issue that arises when individuals experience a mismatch between their social clocks and circadian clocks on performance days, while adhering to their circadian requirements on free days. In modern societies, factors such as electricity, artificial light, late-night technology use, and eating habits widen the gap between the social and circadian clocks. SJL is calculated by determining the absolute difference between the mid-sleep times on free days and performance days, with a larger discrepancy indicating higher severity. This syndrome is particularly more prevalent and pronounced in adolescents and individuals with an evening chronotype; it leads to severe physical, psychological, and behavioral health issues, including daytime fatigue, cognitive distraction, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, depression, and anxiety. To mitigate SJL, maintaining a consistent sleep routine even on free days, maximizing exposure to daylight, adopting a Mediterranean diet, and optimizing work schedules or educational systems according to individual chronotypes are of critical importance.
