Increasing global industrialization and fossil fuel consumption elevate atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, leading to climate crises, droughts, and the necessity of efficient water resource management. In response, biofuels emerge as a critical renewable energy alternative due to their low emissions, biodegradability, and eco-friendly nature. However, traditional first- and second-generation biofuel feedstocks face sustainability constraints because they occupy agricultural land, compete with food supply, and significantly increase the water footprint due to high water consumption during cultivation. Conversely, microalgae, recognized as third-generation biofuel feedstocks, can be cultivated on non-arable land, in wastewater environments, and even in saltwater, boasting high growth rates and high lipid synthesis capacities. Microalgae do not compete with food crops, require no herbicides or pesticides, absorb carbon dioxide from flue gases, and provide wastewater bioremediation, thereby contributing to ecological balance. By consuming less freshwater compared to terrestrial crops, microalgae reduce the blue water footprint while delivering substantially higher biomass yields per unit area and superior higher heating values (HHV). Consequently, microalgae-based third-generation biofuels overcome the land and water constraints of conventional feedstocks, standing out as a strategically vital and highly efficient energy source for sustainable agriculture, environment, and bioeconomy.
