Water, energy, and food resources are fundamental systems that interact heavily with one another and are addressed under the water-energy-food nexus concept. International organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) emphasize that managing these resources through a holistic approach is critical for managing complex natural systems, sustainable agricultural production, ecosystem protection, and resource efficiency. The study states that the overuse or deficiency of any of these three resources creates security risks for the other systems, making balanced management essential. Within this framework, the concept of virtual water—categorized as blue, green, and grey water—comes to the fore, and the role of virtual water flows between countries through agricultural trade in achieving water savings on global and regional scales is examined. Evaluations show that between 1996 and 2005, Turkey was among the net virtual water-importing countries, while a few specific countries dominated global virtual blue water exports. Particularly in water-stressed regions such as the Middle East and the Mediterranean, it is of great importance for decision-makers to develop stable food supply, trade policy, and water management strategies through holistic analyses and data-driven quantitative modeling. In conclusion, in the face of climate change, population growth, and global risks, research supported by high-resolution regional data is deemed essential to ensure countries' resource security and sustainability.
