Vaccination is one of the most important inventions in human history, serving as the most effective, safe, and cost-effective method for preventing infectious diseases. Its primary goal is to control the spread of infection, eliminate diseases, and completely eradicate pathogens, as achieved with smallpox. In Turkey, many vaccines are provided free of charge to children within the scope of the national immunization schedule. Vaccines are mainly classified into three groups: live attenuated, inactivated, and mRNA vaccines. Live vaccines contain weakened microorganisms, while inactivated vaccines consist of killed agents or their components. mRNA technology triggers an immune response by enabling host cells to synthesize specific proteins. Vaccine response is influenced by factors such as antigen type, dose, adjuvant content, and the individual's age and genetic characteristics. Today, vaccine hesitancy and opposition pose significant challenges; at this point, it is critical for physicians to inform families with up-to-date knowledge and establish a bond of trust. Additionally, with the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine development efforts have accelerated, and different technologies such as vector and protein subunit vaccines have entered clinical use. Adherence to the vaccination schedule and high coverage rates are vital for the success of immunization.
