Mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation and carnitine metabolism play a critical role in maintaining the body's energy balance, especially during periods of fasting and stress. Genetic disorders affecting the enzymes in this pathway disrupt energy production, leading to various clinical conditions such as hypoglycemia, myopathy, and cardiomyopathy. While diagnosis typically relies on acylcarnitine profiling and genetic analysis, therapeutic strategies are primarily focused on avoiding prolonged fasting and implementing specific dietary management.
