Classification of epilepsy facilitates patient management by establishing a common language for clinicians to define seizure types, triggers, and treatment options. Throughout history, various approaches have been developed, such as the ILAE's 1981 and 2017 classifications and the Semiological Seizure Classification (SSC), which differentiate focal and generalized seizures based on their core features. For the neonatal period, specific classifications that integrate clinical and EEG findings are employed, and the integrated use of these systems with a holistic approach is recommended.
