Mental and motor regression (MMR) is defined as the progressive loss of previously acquired cognitive and motor skills during childhood. Unlike global developmental delay, it involves a distinct decline, making early diagnosis critical for preventing irreversible damage and managing potentially treatable neurometabolic or neurogenetic conditions. The diagnostic process relies on a comprehensive medical history and physical examination to exclude non-neurological factors, followed by targeted investigations into underlying metabolic or degenerative causes. Management focuses on a multidisciplinary strategy, combining symptomatic support, palliative care, and specific interventions tailored to the underlying etiology.
