Sleep is a complex and active state of unconsciousness essential for maintaining vital functions across nearly all living species. Despite the evolutionary risk of increased vulnerability to predators, sleep has been preserved throughout phylogeny, adapting uniquely to different environments and metabolic needs. Research into REM and NREM cycles reveals their critical roles in brain restoration, memory consolidation, and synaptic plasticity. Future neurobiological investigations aim to further elucidate the molecular mechanisms and evolutionary origins of these sleep states.
