Sleep is a complex, reversible physiological process characterized by reduced consciousness, movement, and metabolism, managed by intricate cellular and genetic mechanisms. Evolving alongside brain development from infancy, it is organized into REM and NREM stages, regulated by circadian and ultradian rhythms. Neural circuits in key brain regions like the brainstem, hypothalamus, and thalamus stabilize transitions between wakefulness and sleep states. Through functions supporting memory consolidation, neural detoxification, and synaptic plasticity, sleep plays a vital role in maintaining overall biological health.
