This text comprehensively examines the first-generation psychological theories (Psychoanalytic Theory, Psychological Theory, Hopelessness Theory, and Escape Theory) explaining suicidal behavior. The psychoanalytic approach, originating with Freud's work on mourning and melancholy and further developed by Menninger and Klein, explains suicide through unconscious aggression directed toward an introjected object of love/hate and the death drive. Shneidman’s Psychological Theory posits that the core of suicide is not depression, but rather an escape from unbearable "psychological pain" (psychache) and frustrated vital psychological needs. Centering on cognitive processes, Beck’s Hopelessness Theory argues that a negative view of the future and feelings of helplessness lead to suicide, noting that the tendency to attribute negative events to internal, stable, and global causes increases this risk. Baumeister's Escape Theory formulates suicide as an escape from the self and pain, analyzing the process in six sequential stages: falling short of expectations, internal attribution of failure, high self-awareness, negative affect, cognitive deconstruction, and accessibility to action. In conclusion, while these traditional theories guide prevention efforts, they remain insufficient in explaining the distinction between suicidal ideation and behavior, as well as fully grasping the complex sociocultural dynamics of the phenomenon, thereby necessitating a more integrative approach with modern models today.
