In this scientific study comprehensively covering lip aesthetics and anatomy, the critical importance of the lip in facial aesthetics and general appearance is emphasized, detailing normal anatomical building blocks, morphology, muscle and artery structures, and aesthetic surgical interventions. The lip region is divided into three main parts as cutaneous, vermilion, and oral mucosa, incorporating critical functional and aesthetic landmarks such as the oral fissure, commissure, philtrum, prochelion, and Cupid's bow. Playing a highly active role functionally in chewing, speaking, swallowing, and facial expressions, the lips anatomically consist of five layers from superficial to deep: skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle layer, submucosa, and mucosa, and are essentially richly supplied by the facial artery. Preserving these structural features is essential in surgical applications; indeed, while a wedge excision method from the wet vermilion is applied in the correction of hypertrophic lips, rib cartilage grafts or implants are preferred for depressive deformities of the nasolabial fold. In the augmentation of thin lips, only absorbable fillers such as hyaluronic acid or autogenous fat are injected into specific points. Consequently, successful lip aesthetics depends on the correct understanding and preservation of normal anatomical landmarks.
