Edema is a clinical condition characterized by an increase in free fluid within the interstitial space, arising from systemic diseases such as heart failure, cirrhosis, or nephrotic syndrome, as well as local factors. Its pathophysiology is primarily based on imbalances in Starling forces and renal sodium and water retention, while the distribution, pitting characteristics, and accompanying symptoms are critical for differential diagnosis. The treatment approach requires a personalized strategy involving fluid and salt restriction, the use of diuretics tailored to the underlying cause, and lifestyle modifications.
