Insomnia is a prevalent health issue characterized by difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, which significantly impairs quality of life and daytime functioning. This disorder, more common in women and older adults, serves as a major risk factor for psychiatric conditions like depression and anxiety while maintaining a bidirectional relationship with various physical comorbidities. Clinical history and sleep diaries are essential diagnostic tools, with the 3P model helping to explain the transition from acute to chronic insomnia. The treatment approach encompasses non-pharmacological methods such as sleep hygiene, stimulus control, and sleep restriction, alongside tailored pharmacological interventions based on individual patient needs.
