Sleep is a complex and active process that ensures mental and physical regeneration of the body, and it is of critical importance for the development of children and adolescents. A healthy sleep cycle consists of two main stages: REM, where rapid eye movements occur, and NREM, where deep rest takes place. While REM sleep is characterized by high brain activity, vivid dreams, and loss of muscle tone, NREM sleep is examined in four stages and is a restorative period during which body functions slow down. The sleep-wake cycle is meticulously regulated by various centers in the brainstem and hypothalamus, as well as neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and orexin. The homeostatic balance of sleep is maintained by the autonomic nervous system and the circadian rhythm controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Physiologically, sleep plays a fundamental role in neuronal maturation, learning, memory consolidation, and metabolic clearance processes. Research indicates that sleep supports language and information acquisition in children by increasing brain plasticity, while sleep deprivation leads to distractibility, aggression, and mood disorders. Therefore, quality sleep during childhood and adolescence is an indispensable element for both academic success and psychosocial health.
