Healthy sleep is critical for the physical, cognitive, and emotional development of infants and children, yet sleep problems are observed in approximately one-quarter of children. Sleep structure changes with age; while newborns spend most of the day asleep, this duration decreases to 11-12 hours during the preschool period. Sleep patterns are directly influenced by environmental factors, maternal health, feeding habits, and parental attitudes. According to the DC:0-5 classification, sleep disorders are addressed under four main headings: sleep onset disorder, night waking disorder, partial waking disorder, and nightmare disorder of early childhood. Behavioral interventions form the basis of treatment, with extinction techniques, positive bedtime routines, and parental education programs being the methods with the strongest evidence. Pharmacological treatment should only be considered in specific cases and alongside behavioral therapies. Untreated sleep problems can lead to attention deficit, impulsivity, and academic failure in children, while also causing depression and burnout in parents. Early diagnosis and intervention are vital for both the developmental health of the child and the preservation of family well-being.
