Biosensors are analytical devices that convert a biological response into measurable optical, thermal, or electrical signals. Their fundamental structure consists of bioreceptors specific to the target analyte and transducers that convert this interaction into a digital signal. Their historical progression began in 1956 with Clark's oxygen electrode and has evolved into advanced enzyme, antibody, aptamer, and whole-cell-based systems. The success of the device depends on the use of selective bioreceptors, effective immobilization techniques (adsorption, entrapment, covalent bonding, etc.), and correct transducer selection. In biochemistry and healthcare, biosensors are of critical importance for early disease diagnosis, patient monitoring, and pathogen detection. They are widely used particularly in diabetes management for glucose sensors, measurement of markers such as CRP and troponin in cardiovascular diseases, detection of tumor markers in cancer diagnosis, and rapid diagnosis of viral infections like COVID-19. Offering portable and real-time analysis opportunities, these technologies generate low-cost and rapid solutions in healthcare by reducing the need for laboratory environments.
