Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) is a robust statistical method used to evaluate the effects of a categorical independent variable with two or more groups on a continuous dependent variable, while statistically controlling and filtering out the effect of a continuous third variable (covariate) that could potentially confound the results. As a combination of ANOVA and regression analysis, this test increases statistical power by reducing error variance and Type II error, providing more effective results than a standard ANOVA, especially in cases with small sample sizes or lower effect sizes. For the method to be applied correctly, it is mandatory to meet key assumptions, including the normal distribution of the dependent variable, homogeneity of variances, a linear relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable, and the homogeneity of regression slopes.
