This text, which examines the critical role of balanced nutrition on mental health and the treatment of psychiatric disorders, comprehensively addresses the relationships between nutrients, gut microbiota, and drug-food interactions. It is stated that a Mediterranean-style diet reduces the risk of depression, whereas a high-calorie Western diet impairs cognitive functions. While B and D vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants support neuronal functions and improve psychiatric symptoms, the balance of zinc, magnesium, and carbohydrates is vital for neurotransmitter synthesis. The gut-brain axis, which provides bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal and central nervous systems, directly affects mood and behaviors through the dysbiosis process in the microbiota, and probiotic microorganisms contribute to the production of neurotransmitters such as GABA and serotonin, which play a role in the pathophysiology of anxiety and depression. Furthermore, it is emphasized that nutrient molecules can interact with enzymes to alter drug pharmacokinetics, and that antipsychotic, antidepressant, mood stabilizer, and benzodiazepine group drugs may lead to side effects or loss of efficacy such as weight gain, constipation, vitamin-mineral deficiencies, and hypertensive crises. Consequently, detailed monitoring of nutritional habits and a multidisciplinary approach in the management of psychiatric diseases are essential for the success of the treatment.
