Among the thousands of therapy methods used in addiction treatment, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), whose foundations were laid in 1935 and which has spread worldwide today, stands out as the most established 12-step self-help group. These groups aim to help individuals with common problems escape social isolation and remain sober or clean through the mutual sharing of experience, strength, and hope. Securing their primary funding entirely from the voluntary donations of their members, these autonomous structures offer an equal space for participation for everyone by strictly adhering to the principles of anonymity and confidentiality. While they achieve individual recovery through 12-step principles conducted under guidance/sponsorship, they protect the unity and continuity of the fellowship with the 12 traditions. Over time, the program was adapted to drug addiction, leading to the birth of massive organizations like Narcotics Anonymous (NA), which operates in 144 countries. Used as a supportive framework under the guidance of healthcare professionals, these free groups extend the remission periods of individuals with substance use disorders while significantly alleviating the economic expenditures of governments in the field of addiction.
