MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNA molecules that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. These molecules play a fundamental role in gene silencing by inhibiting the translation or promoting the degradation of mRNAs. Recent research demonstrates that miRNAs have vital functions in livestock husbandry and veterinary medicine, regulating critical biological processes such as muscle and organ development, immune responses, and metabolism. Circulating miRNAs play active roles in managing lactation physiology, hair and meat yield, and reproductive processes in various domestic animal species, including cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and dogs. Additionally, due to their sensitivity to cellular damage and diseases, these molecules are recognized as highly reliable, next-generation diagnostic biomarkers in the early detection, treatment, and prognosis of critical pathologies such as mastitis, endometritis, coccidiosis, retinal degeneration, and mammary tumors. A better molecular understanding of the biogenesis and epigenetic mechanisms of miRNAs, which exhibit hormone-like effects in intercellular communication and directly modulate physiological processes, will enable the development of highly powerful and promising therapeutic strategies to optimize animal health and increase yield in livestock production in the coming years.
