Bee venom, also known as apitoxin and obtained from honey bees, is a highly valuable natural product of pharmacological importance that has been widely used since ancient times within the scope of apitherapy, a complementary medicine practice. Secreted from glands in the abdominal region of worker bees, this acidic and basic liquid mixture crystallizes by drying at room temperature and reaches its peak production level when bees reach twelve days of age. While 88% of bee venom consists of water, the remaining 12% of dry matter is composed of peptides such as melittin (40-50%), apamin, and adolapin, as well as enzymes like phospholipase A2 and hyaluronidase, and active amines. Applied clinically through three different methods—live bee stings, injection, or bee venom acupuncture—this natural substance possesses strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, and analgesic properties. It offers positive therapeutic results in skin disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, back pain, wound healing, and eczema. Recent clinical and laboratory research has proven that melittin, the main bioactive component, selectively kills tumor cells to reduce tumor size in various cancer types including breast, liver, and lung, and also creates a protective shield against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. However, since bee venom carries a risk of anaphylaxis and cytotoxic effects, it must be purified and administered with extreme caution.
