In this chapter written by Dr. Nurşen Şahin, the concept of leadership, leadership theories, and leadership in sports are comprehensively addressed. Leadership is defined both as a process of directing, coordinating, and influencing group members' activities to achieve organizational goals and as a set of personal traits. Leadership theories in the chapter are classified under the headings of Traits Theory, Behavioral Approach, Contingency Theories, and New Approaches. Following the Traits Theory, which focuses on inherent personal qualities, the Ohio State University, Michigan University, Blake and Mouton's Managerial Grid, McGregor's Theories X and Y, and Likert's System 4 Model, all examining observable leader behaviors, are explained in detail. Under Contingency Theories, which argue that leadership varies according to current situations and conditions, Reddin's 3-D Model, Fiedler's Effective Leadership Model, and the Path-Goal Theory are evaluated. Under the New Approaches heading emerging from contemporary management perspectives, Transactional, Transformational, and Charismatic leadership types are included. In the final part of the study, the Multidimensional Model of Leadership in Sports, developed by Chelladurai to suit the dynamic and competitive nature of sports environments, is examined. This model asserts that the interaction of situational, leader, and member characteristics with leader behaviors (required, actual, and preferred) determines athletes' performance and satisfaction. Furthermore, the critical importance of leadership in sports is highlighted by mentioning the dimensions of the Leadership Scale for Sports—measuring the perceptions and preferences of coaches and athletes—including training and instruction, democratic behavior, autocratic behavior, social support, and positive feedback.
