Anatomy is a science derived from the Greek word meaning to separate into pieces, and it forms the very foundation of medical education. Throughout history, scientists like Hippocrates and Galen contributed to this field, but Andreas Vesalius, who performed human dissections, is recognized as the father of anatomy. The vast majority of anatomical terms are of Latin and Greek origin, and they are defined based on the "Terminologia Anatomica" list relative to a standard anatomical position. The systems of the human body are structured around this terminology; the Systema Locomotorium (locomotor system) consists of bones, joints, and muscles as the active component, providing shape and enabling movement. The Systema Circulatorium (circulatory system) delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues and collects metabolic wastes through the heart's four chambers, arteries, veins, and capillaries, involving two main circulations called systemic and pulmonary. While the respiratory system filters air and performs gas exchange in the lungs with the help of the diaphragm muscle and airways, the digestive system processes food via a canal extending from the mouth to the anus. Finally, the urogenital system filters nitrogen and salt wastes through nephrons in the kidneys to organize excretion and reproduction, whereas the ectoderm-derived nervous system, with its central and peripheral structures, controls these internal organ activities autonomously or voluntarily to interpret and regulate all bodily functions.
