Pandemi ve Stres: Toplum Ruh Sağlığı Üzerine Etkisi

Özet

COVID-19 pandemisi, bireyler ve toplumlar üzerinde sadece fiziksel sağlık sorunlarına yol açmakla kalmamış, aynı zamanda uygulanan karantinalar, sosyal izolasyon, enfeksiyon korkusu, belirsizlikler ve ekonomik kriz beklentileri gibi faktörler nedeniyle toplum ruh sağlığını da derinden sarsmıştır. Yapılan küresel araştırmalar ve meta-analizler; süreç içerisinde genel popülasyonda depresyon, anksiyete (bunaltı), klinik uykusuzluk (koronasomnia), travma sonrası stres bozukluğu (TSSB) semptomları ve intihar eğilimlerinde çok ciddi artışlar yaşandığını net bir şekilde ortaya koymaktadır. Sosyal medyanın yoğun kullanımı ve basında yer alan bunaltıcı haberler kitlelerin psikolojik sıkıntılarını tetiklerken; genç yetişkinler, işsizler, sağlık çalışanları ve düşük gelirli gruplar bu süreçten en fazla etkilenen hassas kesimler haline gelmiştir. Pandemi döneminde zirve noktaya ulaşan bu ruhsal belirtilerin bir kısmı zamanla adaptasyonla azalsa da, önemli bir kısmı uzun süreli ve kronik etkiler göstermeye devam etmiştir. Bu durum, gelecekteki olası pandemilerde mevcut psikiyatri hastalarının takibinin aksatılmamasının, yeni tanı alanlarda tedavilerin ilaç etkileşimleri gözetilerek etkin biçimde yönetilmesinin, topluma baş etme becerileri kazandırılmasının ve çevrimiçi destek mekanizmaları gibi koruyucu ruh sağlığı hizmetlerinin yaygınlaştırılmasının ne kadar kritik olduğunu kanıtlamaktadır.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only caused physical health problems but has also profoundly shaken public mental health due to factors such as quarantines, social isolation, fear of infection, uncertainties, and expectations of economic crisis. Global studies and meta-analyses clearly demonstrate a significant increase in depression, anxiety, clinical insomnia (coronasomnia), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and suicidal behaviors across the general population during this period. While intense social media use and distressing news reports triggered psychological distress among the masses; young adults, the unemployed, healthcare workers, and low-income groups became the most vulnerable segments affected by this process. Although some of these mental symptoms that peaked during the pandemic decreased over time through adaptation, a significant portion continued to exhibit long-term and chronic effects. This situation proves how critical it is in future potential pandemics to ensure that the follow-up of existing psychiatric patients is not disrupted, new treatments are effectively managed considering drug interactions, coping skills are provided to society, and preventive mental health services like online consultations are expanded.
